By not submitting golf scores at VERY easy course am I cheating the golf handicap system?
I play at a very easy course that is near by my house. It’s great for playing with my kids and easily accessible before/after work for a quick round. It’s a 9 hole course: par 35 2671 yard 32.7/99. I’m a 12 handicap, but I regularly shoot close to par on this course. I’m not submitting these scores for 2 reasons 1) I think it will artificially lower my handicap, 2) I’ll be ridiculed by my weekend golf buds if they see those scores posted from such an easy course. I hope I’m not breaking the rules, but I think of these rounds as "practice" rounds. Is what I’m doing OK? Thanks.
Thanks for the early responses! For the record, I am aware that slope ratings are specifically designated to adjusting for course difficulty, but the rating on this course, as low as it is, still seems too high.
Also, I am not selectively posting. I simply never post a score played on this course period regardless of how good or bad the score is.
I’m thinking I should just start posting these scores and let the chips fall. If my handicap get artificially low and I can’t compete on a real course anymore, I’ll just stop playing on that course.
Thanks again!
Thanks for the input everyone. I really appreciate it. I may be ignorant of the rules, but I’m not a cheat. I’ll be posting scores from this and any slope rated course I play.
Cheers!
You MUST post every score. There is nothing "artificial" about what may happen to your index if you just happen to tear this course a new one. I’d be more concered about your friends calling you a sandbagger when they have to give you strokes that you don’t deserve.
By the way–Matt , Golf pro and handicap chairman? How stupid do you think we are?

Courses have different course ratings and slopes from others to account for the fact that some courses are easy and some are difficult. Yes not posting your scores is kind of cheating the system but I know a ton of players who don’t always post every score.

The fact that a course is "easy" does not eliminate it from calculating a handicap. You have a slope rating and a course rating which are factored into your handicap. If you are playing on a course which has a higher slope your " easy course " handicap will be factored upward. The USGA has a handicap system that will give you a higher handicap when you play on more difficult tracks.

I think the fact that it is a nine hole course is a big out for you. I don’t think you are obligated to post those scores. Think back to how many times have your front and back scores been night and day?

The course rating is what’s important in Handicap posting. Even though you shoot close to par every time, it shouldn’t really affect your handicap because the course rating is so low. At this time you should be posting all your scores, no matter where they are played or if you only played 9 holes. Post them all. If you don’t, you’re not following the rules.
Kudos for honesty and honor, though!

Well, yes and no. If you were to post, let’s say a 37 (+2) then your handicap differential would be a +4.9, which seems about right for a 12. Then it would be like shooting something like a 42 on a "regular" course for 9 holes. 2671 yards is awfully short, though. I’d venture a guess there isnt a par 4 over 400 yards and the one par 5 is really short.
You don’t want to start posting these rounds (or doubling up to 9′s for a full round) if you think you can’t possibly play to it on a more difficult course. Then again, you certainly don’t want to be a sandbagger. Those guys suck.

That is absolutely not OK. Your handicap is not legitimate if you aren’t turning all your scores in. The difficulty of the golf course is factored into the course and slope ratings. Even par on that course may have the same effect on your handicap that an 80 might at a difficult course. Turn your scores in!! No offence, but its people like you who give the handicap system, a great system, a bad name.
